They may not be the first thing that pops into your mind when you’re thinking about kitchen gadgets, but as a former Childcare Provider I can tell you, if you have small children… you’ll be counting your blessings and thanking the minds behind today’s inventors of gadgets designed to keep you little ones safe in the kitchen!
Children are curious by nature so they are going to want to get into every drawer and cupboard they can reach. Add into it the fact that are powerful mimics who want to copy your every move and I advise you to never under estimate they’re ability to do the seemingly impossible!
Certainly there are things as large as a safety gate that can keep your child out of the kitchen altogether when you’re not in there supervising. But we know that despite it’s dangers, the kitchen can provide rich learning experiences.
That’s where the clever parent uses a little creative (and child-like) thinking along with some nifty gadgets like drawer, cupboard and appliance locks and latches.
Because your little ones will revel in the experience of mixing, measuring and banging on pots, pans and bowls, give some thought to storing all the non-breakable bowls and pans in the lower cabinets. Sort through your variety of utensils and keep the rubber and plastic ones in a drawer easily reached by your child so they can help themselves. Yes… you’ll have to supervise to avoid pinched fingers but the learning, confidence and self-esteem gained is well worth the risk. Here’s something to keep in mind – never leave more than the lowest drawer unlatched and available to your child. Even is the others are filled with safe items such as bibs and washcloths, children can create a very dangerous ‘stairway’ when they can pull several drawers open.
