As I was holding an onion under cold running water while peeling it this afternoon, I was pondering various old wives tales… some of which seem to hold true, some NOT. Including that ‘trick’ of cutting an onion under cold running water to prevent the burning and weepy eyes so many of us experience when cutting an onion. Now I don’t consider myself as someone with any special sensitivity but I gotta tell ya… I am more and more uncomfortable with cutting onions with every year.
Now, there are gadgets galore to ease this issue… when I want my onions chopped I can use my hand chopper or my Magic Bullet, where the onion juice is somewhat contained during the chopping process rather than landing as a light mist into my eyes.
But today I wanted my onions sliced so I was simply crying and slicing, crying and slicing.
So after dinner was prepared and ready to hit the oven, I decided to do a little research and look into a solution for this little, but bothersome, problem. I never expected to find ONION GOGGLES but that’s exactly what I found!!! After a moment of… “Why didn’t I think of that?!?” I went on to discover that
RSVP’s Onion Goggles (with yes, a pink pair associated with the Breast Cancer Awareness Program THINK PINK) claim to take care of the problem. Lined with foam to create a seal around your eyes, with lenses treated to prevent fogging, the users claim these onion goggles really do the trick.
While I appreciate the anti-fog treatment of the Onion Goggles, it’s important to prevent that ever-blinding fog that could cause me to slice a fingertip off by mistake… but I am concerned about how well they’ll fit over my glasses. I don’t wear contacts, in fact, I just use magnifiers for ‘close-up’ work… which may soon include chopping food at the rate I’m going.
So…….. if they come with a ‘magnifier’ version I’ll be they will be practically perfect! In the meantime, while I prefer the more stylish look of the Onion Goggles I may have to resort to the hideous looking chemistry lab goggles one of my boys brought home from school.
